I have been geeking out at hulu.com lately. If you have not been there, it’s a relatively new online video site that posts clips, and full length TV shows and movies, free to view with advertiser support. It’s a very cool site, with a lot of good content, which ranges from current TV shows to old nostalgic ones. But in many ways, I feel guilty patronizing this site, as it’s (at least partly) owned by the evil Rupert Murdoch, in a partnership between NBC and Universal studios. They do a masterful job, with a GREAT flash player, and really good video quality. But it must somehow be laden with some propogandist mind control or something. It must!
Oh well… I shall resist the mind control, and watch anyway. If J. Medicine Hat can’t break me, neither can Evil Murdoch.
The video selection isn’t as great as you wish it would be, however. It has a LOT of ancient, crap shows. But some of them are fun to watch. For kicks, I watched an old movie called “At the Earth’s Core”, from 1976. It stars Doug McClure, and Peter Cushing (a.k.a. Grand Moff Tarkin, for your Star Wars geeks). It’s astoundingly terrible, and should be FODDER for the MST3K-cum-rifftrax folks. But fun in it’s own way.
But there are a lot of good ones too. I have watched almost the entire first two seasons of News Radio, a GREAT show from the mid nineties that I used to really like. I have also been watching all the old Battlestar Galactica series episodes from 1978. MAN I loved that show, and it really brings me back. Yes, it’s exceedingly cheesey, but if you choke back the techno-geek gag reflex, it’s actually a very enjoyable show.
Anyway, the site is worth a visit, even if it is giving more power to the media-demon Murdoch. Here’s a quick Family Guy clip they have posted. Sadly, they only have five Family Guy full episodes posted. I’m hoping they do some big fancy media-mogul licensing deals to get more shows up there. This site shows potential!
